In Focus: Marni

At creative director Francesco Risso's apartment in Milan, Marni presented its autumn/winter 2021 Vol.2 collection over breakfast, lunch and dinner among friends. An intimate feast for the senses, the collection is a romantic ode to dressmaking at its most tactile and familiar. A quest for romance expressed in colour and shape. Nipped at the waist, shirts become corsages, and trenchcoats get the petticoat roundness of a cake skirt. Hoodies are inflated into opera cloaks and bikers are slashed into blankets and puffers into stoles. Zippers are covered in ruffles and form punky jabots. It is a collection that encourages us to live and love.

Designing his second Marni collection in lockdown, Francesco Risso realised that the virtual humdrum had him hankering for romanticism. Developed almost entirely by hand, the collection became a quest for understanding what triggers a romantic state of mind. “Life! Life is romantic,” the Sardinia-born, CSM-educated, Miuccia Prada-trained creative director told Vogue back in March. A life that allows for laughs, for positive thinking, and definitely not for abandoning the feeling of the hand that makes things.” The collection is a direct response to continued separation, a well-crafted call-to-arms to come together. Inspired, LN-CC wanted to play Marni matchmaker by bringing our audience that bit closer and to hopefully find love. By casting and documenting genuine first dates, we wanted to capture the energy, awkwardness and optimism of these moments within a specially created Marniverse.

Cast from the high volume of responses we received to our Marni Matches Instagram shares, we found two potential couples; Divine and Suki, Shel and Joseph. After sending them their Marni full-looks to dress themselves in, we invited London-based chef Jamie Smart to create the perfect, seasonal first date menu. “We wanted to create a special, indulgent and conversation provoking menu,” Jamie explained. “A great chef once told me the height of luxury in cooking comes in delicate flavours that stay with you long after you’ve finished the meal and that’s what I’ve attempted with the likes of caviar/vin jaune butter sauces and sweetened goats curd with warmed figs.” Delicious. As we took over the cute dining space of our Shacklewell Lane neighbour Café Mélo, we enlisted award winning director of photography Sal Redpath to document the date. Did our Marni Matches find love? Watch and decide as we get to know each couple a little better...

DIVINE AND SUKI

Could you introduce yourself?
Divine: I’m Divine, I’m 25, a model and compliance consultant. I live in London, but I’m originally from Hamburg.
Suki: I’m Suki, a tattoo artist from London.

What are you into?
Divine: Any art. I love fashion, film, photography and literature. Then anything physical, like sport.

Could you describe your dating history in three words?
Divine: Beautiful, heartbreaking, whirlwind. Whether that sounds good or bad, I’m not too sure.
Suki: Not very good.

Do you believe in love at first sight?
Divine: I do. I think I’ve experienced it one time when I walked past someone in the corridor, our eyes locked and I just knew. Bam.
Suki: It hasn’t happened to me yet, so I can’t say but maybe tonight is the night.

Tell us about your best ever date...
Divine: This is a hard one. I think it would be in Barcelona, a 1940s time capsule with beautiful company.. That encapsulates my best date ever.

Divine and Suki ate pickled mackerel, green radish and shiso for starter, Turbot, Hispi cabbage & caviar for main, finishing with Goats Curd, fig & fig leaf.

SHEL AND JOSEPH

Could you introduce yourself?
Joseph: I’m Joseph, I’m a fashion stylist and I live in London. I enjoy going out with friends, clubbing.
Shel: I’m Shel, 25. My pronouns are he or they. I identify as non-binary. I’m originally from the US but have lived in London for most of my life. I work in PR at the moment, but I’m also a music producer and DJ.

What are you into?
Shel: I’m into boys, non-binary people. Definitely staying away from toxic masculine vibes. Just emotionally aware, kind, intelligent people.

Could you describe your dating history in three words?
Shel: Cheeky, passionate, ephemeral. Dating in the gay world can be short lived in a lot of ways.

Do you believe in love at first sight?
Shel: Only infatuation, obsession or something like that at first sight. Love grows and builds over time.

Tell us about your best ever date...
Shel: I went to a spa with this guy and then we ended up going for a drink, then a club night, then stayed at his for the next day. That was fab!
Joseph: Spending hours at a fancy hotel and not spending a penny.

Shell and Joe ate Dexter beef & truffle for starters, Mallard, wild mushrooms, pear and bitter leaves for main, before finishing with Goats Curd, fig & fig leaf.
